PROCLAMATION OF COVID-19 NATIONAL STATE OF EMERGENCY FOR SAMOA
Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi has declared a 14-day National State of Emergency, effective from 12am; 21 March 2020 – 4 April 2020 in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
Some of the highlights include :
- One week of fasting and prayers for the country from Sunday 22nd March to Saturday 29th March.
- Samoa to close its borders to the rest of the world – residents and citizens only.
- All schools to be closed.
- All nightclubs, theatres to be closed from midnight tonight.
- Bus services halted – taxi’s to continue.
- Gatherings of more than 5 people prohibited.
- Markets at Fugalei, Savalalo, Vaitele & Salelologa to be opened from 6am to 6pm daily then close – vendors prohibited from camping and sleeping overnight at the market premises
- Street vendors banned from street vending during the period of the proclamation
- All official travel to be suspended; Ministry CEOs and Heads of Government State Enterprises are to undertake supervision roles during the period of the National State Emergency.
- All sports events, festivals, weddings, church services etc to be suspended;
- Travel to Savaii only 3 times a week.
- Limited passengers between Auck-Apia, one flight per week to Australia – flights from Tonga and Fiji, suspended.
- Seasonal workers scheme for New Zealand and Australia halted until further notice.
- Overseas scholarship studies halted for all students until further notice.
- Hospital visits prohibited unless to see a doctor. Only one family caregiver allowed per patient.
