Kerry Ratana declined parole at first hearing after eight years in jail for killing his step-daughter.
A man who sexually violated then killed his five-year-old step-daughter has made a positive start to changing his ways but still has “considerable work” to do after serving half of his 16-and-a-half year jail sentence.
Kerry Ratana, 32, had parole declined at his first appearance before the Parole Board last month.
Ratana killed Sahara Jayde Baker-Koro in her Napier home on December 20, 2010.He pleaded guilty to manslaughter but denied a charge of sexual violation.
Ratana has been in custody since his arrest soon after the death. A jury found him guilty of the second charge in April 2012, at which point he was sentenced with a minimum prison term of eight years and three months.
The Parole Board noted Ratana’s 44 convictions, including eight for violent offending, and that he had been assessed as posing a high risk of sexual and violent re-offending.
He had made progress in learning how to process his emotions without recourse to drugs and told the board he was “committed to change”.
“Mr Ratana seems to be making solid progress in getting to grips with issues in his past and the seriousness of his offending. More than once he referred to his remorse for what he did to his victim, and the consequences for the victim’s family,” the board said.
However “there is considerable work for Mr Ratana to complete” and parole was declined.
Ratana was referred to a psychologist and the Kia Marama child sex offender treatment programme. He would return to the board in two years time.
Sahara’s death occurred when Ratana lived with her mother Chantally Baker, their two-year-old son Rome, and another daughter of Ms Baker’s previous relationship.
While Baker was out working Ratana became angry with Sahara. He took her to her room and crushed her chest until she stopped breathing.
She died after the right atrium of her heart ruptured.
