The youngest victim of the Christchurch terror attack has been released from hospital.
Two-year-old Averroes was saved from serious injury in the Linwood mosque attack because his father, Zulfirman Syah, shielded him from the bullets with his own body.
The boy escaped with minor injuries to his leg and was released from hospital on Friday.
Syah is still in hospital with multiple gunshot wounds. Syah’s wife, Alta Sacra, posted on a GoFundMe page for the family that her husband would be “released sometime [this] week, with an extensive at-home treatment plan”.
She wrote that her son was “in good spirits despite still requiring ongoing at-home medical care”.
Sacra wrote that she met Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Thursday.
“[She] was exactly as we expected her to be: full of grace, compassion, and empathy, coupled with a willingness to tackle the unmet needs of individuals and the entire nation,” she wrote.
“To everyone who has donated, prayed, sent well-wishes, positive vibes, and especially to those complete strangers who were kind, decent human beings in moments of crisis: Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts.”
Last week, Sacra wrote that her husband was in intensive care and had undergone extensive surgery.
“My husband … shielded our son during the attack at Linwood Islamic Centre, which caused him to receive most of the bullets and much more complex injuries than our son. He is in stable condition following the extensive exploratory and reconstructive surgery he had earlier today [Saturday],” Sacra said.
“While he is still in the intensive care unit at this stage, he will be moved to the general ward whenever it is deemed appropriate … while the road to recovery will be long, his condition has only improved since he arrived at the hospital yesterday.”
